Frequently asked questions about Full Container Load
What are the standard FCL container sizes?
Standard FCL options include 20' GP (33 CBM, ~21 tons), 40' GP (67 CBM, ~26 tons), and 40' HC (76 CBM, ~26 tons). We also source specialty containers like 45' HC, flat racks, and open tops for oversized cargo.
How much cargo do I need to justify FCL?
As a rule, FCL becomes more cost-effective when your shipment exceeds 15 CBM. Below that, LCL consolidation is usually cheaper. We calculate the break-even for your specific lane and cargo to recommend the best option.
What is the transit time for FCL from China to the US?
West Coast ports (LA/Long Beach): 14–18 days. East Coast ports (NY/NJ, Miami): 25–32 days via Panama Canal. We offer expedited routing and guaranteed space allocations for time-sensitive FCL shipments.
Can I track my FCL container in real time?
Yes. Every FCL shipment includes real-time vessel and container tracking through our platform. You receive milestone notifications for departure, transshipment, arrival, customs release, and delivery.
Do you offer door-to-door FCL service?
Yes. Our FCL service is fully door-to-door — from pickup at the shipper's facility through ocean transit, customs clearance, and final delivery to your warehouse or distribution center anywhere in the US.
What are the standard FCL container dimensions?
A 20-foot container (TEU) has internal dimensions of approximately 5.9m × 2.35m × 2.39m with about 33 cubic meters of capacity. A 40-foot container (FEU) is approximately 12.0m × 2.35m × 2.39m with about 67 cubic meters. A 40-foot High Cube adds 30cm of height, providing about 76 cubic meters. Maximum payload varies but is typically 25-28 tons.
What is the maximum weight I can load in a container?
Maximum gross weight for a standard container is typically 30,480 kg (67,200 lbs), but actual payload depends on the container tare weight (around 2,200-3,800 kg). Additionally, road weight limits in many countries restrict loaded container weight to 20-24 tons. We help optimize your loading to comply with all weight regulations.
How do I choose between a 20ft and 40ft container?
Choose 20ft containers for heavy, dense cargo (like stone, metals, or liquids) where weight limits are reached before volume. Choose 40ft containers for lighter, voluminous cargo (like furniture, textiles, or consumer goods). We analyze your cargo dimensions and weight to recommend the most cost-effective container size.
What is container free time and detention?
Free time is the number of days you can use a carrier-owned container at destination without charges — typically 3-7 days. After free time expires, detention charges apply for each additional day. These charges escalate and can become very expensive. Prompt cargo pickup and efficient warehouse operations help avoid detention fees.
Can I ship mixed cargo in one FCL container?
Yes. An FCL container can hold multiple SKUs, product types, or even cargo for different purchase orders — as long as it all belongs to one shipper and consignee. This is different from LCL where multiple shippers share a container. Proper stowage planning ensures fragile items are protected and heavy items are floor-loaded correctly.
